The Berthoulier Confusion
My 3rd great grandfather Adolphus C. BARTAWAY (BERTHOULIER) has been a pain in my tookus. Tracking his heritage down is a big goal in my genealogy search. Pop heard stories as a child that Adolphus had attended the Chicago World's Fair and had his own booth. My father fancies himself a bit of a mechanical engineer and truth be told he's wrangled together some handy tools and projects over the years. It would be nice to find out the truth behind those stories and let him know if this branch contributes to his mechanical inclinations.
What We Know From What We Have
1890
An Indiana marriage certificate on 29 Mar 1890 lists Adolphus C. BARTAWAY as groom and Adalina HAGANBAUGH (HAGENBUCH) BARTAWAY as bride. The second marriage of the couple took place in Fowler, Benton, Indiana, United States. The groom would be 43 years old on his next birthday, and was born in France, to 'John BARTAWAY' and 'Clara SULLIVAN'. The bride would be 39 years old on her next birthday, born in Indiana, to 'Enoch HAGANBAUGH' (HAGENBUCH) and 'Christena GREENWALL'. There are two databases that link to the same set of images on FamilySearch, "Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992" and "Indiana Marriages, 1811-2007".
The majority if not all of their children should have been born before this second marriage of theirs simply due to the fact of Adalina's age. I have records of at least 6 children and there is little possibility she gave birth to them all in her 40s that early in medical history. As this is the earliest piece of documentation currently available, we have to fill in Adolphus and Adalina's life before this from information on their children and gravestones.
1893
Adolphus and Adalina's daughter Selena C. married Frederick REIZE on 26 Jun 1893 in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. There are two databases again, both labelled "Wisconsin, County Marriages, 1836-1911". There are currently no images for this record. Information regarding age and place of birth for the bride and groom is not available from this record.
1899
Adolphus died on 02 Jun 1899. According to the information found at Find A Grave, he is buried in Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery, Chicago, Cook, Illinois, United States. His year of birth is listed at about 1846. According to the documentation, Adolphus is buried in section 39, lot 455, grave 3. There is no marker present.
1900
There are no images available for this record in the databases labeled "Wisconsin Marriages, 1836-1930" and "Wisconsin, County Marriages, 1836-1911" on FamilySearch, however transcription by volunteers lists Adolphus C. as Charles Adolphus BARTAWAY in the entry for his daughter Anna Josephine BARTAWAY's marriage on 12 Aug 1900 to Ira Allen BATTENBERG in Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States. Transcription lists Anna Josephine's place of birth as Goodland, Indiana. Goodland is a town in Grant Township, Newton County. No age for the bride is available from this record.
1904
There are four database images available for the marriage of Edward BARTAWAY, son of Adolphus and Adalina. Due to the multipage nature of many marriage registers, some data extractions do not list his wife's name. Two images come from a browsable film database labeled "Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992" and two images come from the "Indiana Marriages, 1811-2007". From the combined data, we know that Edward was born in Champaign County, Illinois. He was 25 at his next birthday when he married the soon to be 19 year old Ada MOORE on 24 Feb 1904. Ada was born to Douglass MOORE and Everett (?) FULERTON in York, Nebraska. Birth dates are not listed in this record.
Legacy NFS Resources
I desperately dislike when Legacy NFS Resources are cited as sources for an individual. Perhaps it is because it is far more difficult for me to access images of this data. They are also usually user-added text and typically have more errors than other sources accessed through FamilySearch.1870
I have not found Adolphus in my 1870 census searches on FamilySearch, but someone else found him through the formerly named MyFamily.com site which now forwards to Ancestry, the information indexed by the latter from the "1870 U.S. census, population schedule, Illinois" online database. The extracted data says that he was born about 1847 in France and that on census day, 19 August 1870, he lived in Waltham Twp, La Salle, Illinois, United States.
I want to track down and see the document myself as I have gleaned far more information from census records than this before. It is possible that the enumerator's notes in the margin for street names and house numbers is legible, although not always. Seeing the document myself would also provide me with information regarding who else was living in the same home.
1880
I again have not found Adolphus in my 1880 US census searches through FamilySearch, but the same user found information on him through The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the 1880 U.S. census, population schedule, Indiana. The extracted data says that he was born about 1847 in France and that on census day, 3 June 1880, Adolphus lived in Union Twp, Benton, Indiana, United States.
Again, seeing the document myself could help fill in home address and other members of the household.
1888
In the Chicago Voter Registration List, 1888, Illinois State Archives available through paid Ancestry membership, the same user supplied transcribed information from Adolphus' life. He registered to vote on 9 October 1888 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, United States.
1890
We now line up with where the FamilySearch documentation begins. This is additional documentation of the second marriage between former spouses Adolphus BARTAWAY and Adalina HAGANBOUGH BARTAWAY in Wadena, Benton, Indiana, United States. This reference now lists Adolphus' birth year as about 1848 in France.
1899
The last user supplied resource in Legacy NFS Resource format is far more believable and trustworthy to me. The user that supplied the reference states that a copy of Adolphus' death certificate is in the possession of a distant cousin with whom I shared correspondence about 16 years ago. She is another inheritor of Great Aunt Lela's research. This data and certificate comes from the Department of Health in the City of Chicago, the Bureau of Vital Statistics. It is record number 11768. It lists Adolphus' birth in about 1846 in France. His residence and unshared occupation in 1899 was in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, United States. Death occurred on 2 June 1899 with burial in a cemetery the next day, the 3rd of June.
Adolphus Information Pre-Summary
In summary thus far, Adolphus was born in France between 1846 and 1848. He married Adalina HAGENBUCH in the United States, had a few children, divorced her, and remarried her in 1890 in Indiana. He registered to vote in Illinois towards the end of his life in 1888. He was alive at the time his daughter Selena married in 1893. He died in Chicago in 1899. His children Anna Josephine and Edward married after his death.Next Time on The BARTAWAY Rabbit Hole...
To get a picture of Adolphus (and Adalina) prior to their second marriage to each other, I have to do some research on their children. From information gleaned thus far, Adolphus and Adalina only had 3 children, Selena, Anna Josephine, and Edward. I know they also had Charles Adolphus because he is my 2nd great grandfather and additional information lists Adolphus as his father. Next post: Adolphus and Adalina Bartaway's children.
